Every summer, the PCRF sponsors summer camps in the Middle East for Palestinian children who are living under occupation, the diaspora and in poverty, including disabled and handicapped children in an effort to help provide some activities and relief for children who otherwise are idle, and to also build bridges between children from different backgrounds. These camps are held in all areas of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and even in the refugee camps in Lebanon, and have included a certain number of disabled children in each camp to help break down stereotypes that exist in Palestinian society against disabled people, starting with children as a means to ensure the next generation are more understanding and accepting of those among them who suffer from some kind of physical disability. While the older generations in Palestine attach a certain shame towards family, neighbors or others in society who are disabled, we hope that by including children from all over the society into summer camps, the next generation will champion the rights of disabled members of their society and work to make Palestinian society in the territories as well as the diaspora more tolerant and accepting of all members.
