Medical Missions: Urology
Jenin
children have surgery through PCRF team
On March 15, a 3-member team arrived
in the West Bank town of Jenin for a week of pediatric urology
at the main government hospital. Led by two surgeons -- Dr.
Sakti Das from the Bay area of California and Dr. Scott Eggeners
from the University of Chicago-- and Dr. Hussein Abu Khudair,
chief of anesthesiology at the King Hussein Cancer Center
in Amman, Jordan. After screening 120 children with a variety
of urological disorders, the team operated long hours and
treated over 30 children in 5 days. This mission was in cooperation
with International Volunteers in Urology (IVU).
PCRF
surgery mission treats children in Beit Jala Hospital
On March 15, Professor José Ricardo
Yañez Pizarro and his wife, anesthetist Dr. Ximena
Castillo from the University of Concepción, in Chile
arrived in the West Bank town of Beit Jala to begin a week
of surgery on Palestinian children with congenital urological
malformations, particularly children suffering from hypospadias.
This is their first trip to Palestine through the PCRF. They
were recruited in cooperation and partnership with the International
Volunteers in Urology, an American organization. The team
will work a full week, treating dozens of children with complex
deformities. There currently are no pediatric urologists working
in Palestine, and the PCRF has hundreds of children with this
disease in need of surgery. More pediatric urology missions
are planned for both Gaza and the West Bank in the coming
months to address this need and train local physicians.
American
Surgery Mission Treats Patients in Hebron, Nablus
On
February 8, Dr. David Brenner, a urologist, and Dr. Cathy
Brenner, a general surgeon, began a month-long mission through
the PCRF at the Alia Government Hospital in Hebron. The Brenners
are from Alaska and volunteered in Palestine for the first
time, providing training and complex surgery on patients with
various problems. After two weeks in Hebron, they will move
to Rafidiah Hospital in Nablus, providing the same expert
surgical services and training for local patient.
Pediatric
Urology Team treats Refugees in Beirut
On
June 23, 2006, the PCRF sent two pediatric urologists working
in Saudi Arabia -- Dr. Hafez Ashraf from the King Faisal Hospital
in Riyadh and Dr. Khalid Al-Taheini from the ARAMCO Hospital
in Damman -- to Haifa Hospital in the Bourj Al Barajnah refugee
camp in Beirut to treat children from the refugee camps in
Lebanon with urological disorders. These two volunteers treated
several children in need of surgery otherwise not available
to them locally and will continue to provide this care for
future children in the Palestinian camps there.
French
Surgeon Operates on Children in Palestine
On May 1, Dr. Thierry Basset, a pediatric
urological surgeon from Lyon, France, returned to Palestine
for a month of surgery on children suffering from many congenital
malformations. This is his second mission to Palestine in
2006, as he worked in Gaza in March. Dr. Basset worked in
Gaza, and will work at St. Luke's Hospital in Nablus and Al-Ahli
Hospital in Hebon. Due to new government restrictions on American
charities working in Palestine, the PCRF is no longer able
to work in PA Ministry of Health hospitals and now has to
treat children in private hospitals. Dr. Basset will work
for all of May in Palestine and will treat several dozen children.
International Urology Mission screens children in the West
Bank
On
April 5-7, volunteers from the International Volunteers in
Urology (IVU) arrived in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to meet
with local doctors, visit hospitals and evaluate children
as part of an effort to build a pediatric urology mission
in Palestine. Led by Executive Director Alyssa McBride and
Dr. Scott Eggener, they visited four hospitals and screened
dozens of children in Hebron and Jenin, and found over 50
kids in need of surgery. There is currently no pediatric urological
program in Palestine the PCRF is working with the IVU and
local doctors to build a long-term program in Palestine. Last
month, Dr. Thierry Basset from France did two weeks of pediatric
urological surgery in Gaza, and other missions are planned
for later in 2006.
Pediatric
Urologist Treats Children in Gaza
On March 9th, Dr. Thierry Basset,
a French pediatric urologist, arrived in Gaza for two weeks
of treating poor children in need of surgery. Most of these
children are born with congenital malformations, but some
are injured or develop serious problems. There is no pediatric
urologist surgeon in the entire Gaza Strip, with a population
of 1.5 million people, over half children. The PCRF is working
to develop a long-term program in pediatric urology there
so the hundreds of children in need of such treatment can
get care locally, and have future missions planned in this
specialty.
