Pediatric
Neurosurgery Mission treats Children
in Ramallah, Jerusalem
On November 15, a 5-member team of doctors arrived
from the USA to begin a week of complex neurosurgery on sick
and injured Palestinian children in the West Bank town of
Ramallah, as well as two days doing complex brain and spine
surgery in Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem. Led by Dr.
Alexander Zorous, chief of pediatric neurosurgery at the Loma
Linda University Hospital in California, and accompanied by
surgeons Dr. Ahmed Khaldi from Chicago and Dr. Kareem Zaghoul
from Philadelphia, as well as anesthesiologist Dr. Richard
Bosco from Jacksonville, Florida and Dr. Laura Badwan from
Chicago. They screened nearly 70 children and provided surgery
on nearly a dozen children. Here Dr. Zorous, Dr. Zaghoul and
Dr. Khaldi are with 16-year-old Nabil Omar Husein from Silwad,
who was shot in the spine by Israeli soldiers and is paralyzed.
He suffered from a deteriorating spinal condition known as
Syringomyelia. The team provided Nabil a spine operation in
hope that his condition will stabilize and he will regain
some hand function.
Pediatric
neurosurgery mission treats children in Ramallah
On January 10, a 3-member team from
the USA arrived in Ramallah to begin providing pediatric neurosurgery
on children from the West Bank. Led by Dr. Alexander Zouros
from Loma Linda University in California, the team also includeded
Dr. Deanna Dalia, an anesthesiologist from Cincinnati, and
Dr. Ahmed Khaldi from Layola University in Chicago. The team
was focusing on providing mainly spine surgery on patients
with tethered cords, and screened also nearly 100 children.
French
Neurosurgery Team Returns to Gaza
On December 15, 2006, a 5-member
team of doctors and nurses from France returned to Nasser
Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza to continue their
training of local surgeons in peripheral nerve surgery. They
have participated in several missions to Gaza and Jenin since
2000 and have trained several local surgeons, as well as treated
many kids. The team included Prof. Chistophe Oberlin, Dr.
Christohe Denates, Christine Lagoueyte, Roberto Beccari, and
Lauriane Frick.
