"Why I Became a Sponsor"
by Sonia Nettnin

I became a sponsor for the Women’s Empowerment Project because many Palestinian women are forced to provide for their families. The conflict has created a disastrous situation for the Palestinian people. When there’s violence, women and children suffer the most brutality. One of the most effective responses to this abuse is sponsorship.

As a result of the conflict, some of these women have been widowed; and some of their husbands have disabilities. Nevertheless, these resilient women are potential entrepreneurs. They have the will to pave their way out of tragedy.

What these women need are sponsors to support their projects. Their initiative, hard work and determination will create the enterprise. A woman’s empowerment gives her the economic means to provide for herself and her family.

I sponsored a woman whose husband was killed by the IDF. She has six children, including a baby. When I saw their picture, I felt hope for their future.

This mother has no income. How can she feed her family?

Her profile states she wants a rabbit farm. She has previous experience. Also, it explains what she needs to establish her business. Sponsorship is an economic grant so she can provide for her family. She deserves a chance. What is the alternative? What are her options?

I await a picture of the rabbit farm and a letter of thanks. If I had the chance, I would like to thank her for giving me this sponsorship opportunity. I feel selfish, if that makes any sense.

UPCRF makes sponsorship simple. They screen the candidates. Then, UPCRF determines which projects are suitable for sponsorship. They provide a file about the candidate, along with a family photo. Sponsors are updated with a picture of the candidate’s business project and a letter from her.

Sponsorship is not about recognition or awards. It’s about sharing resources, so people can help themselves. Support of a candidate acknowledges her talents and abilities. A woman’s worth is invaluable . . . they preserve the world. The Women’s Empowerment Project is a celebration of life.

Children are the world’s most precious gifts. Their needs must be met for healthy growth and development.  Not only does one-thousand dollars give a woman and her family more hope for a bright future, it makes it possible.

One way to raise money for sponsorship is have an empowerment party. A social event creates a warm, information-sharing atmosphere. Invite family and friends. Have the UPCRF web site available for guests – handouts about the project are helpful.

Help these families create their future. They have endured more than most people suffer in a lifetime. A woman’s empowerment is an inspiration for humanity. Support the project today.
