Pediatric Surgery for Children in Gaza

Pediatric surgery is a specialized area of medicine that focuses on general surgery and other non-invasive operations specifically for children. These operations can often be life-saving with procedures like fixing birth defects, transplantation operations, the diagnosis and surgical care of tumors, cardiac surgery, treating serious injuries that require surgery, and all other surgical procedures that a child may need.

Pediatric surgery is especially important in Gaza, where many children are born with medical conditions, like congenital heart disease, are part of the amputee crisis in Gaza, or simply face constant dangerous living conditions every day as they grow up in the middle of a warzone. All of these situations combine to create a dire need for pediatric medical support in this Palestinian territory. However, due to the limited resources within Gaza and difficulty accessing the area, some children are unable to get the crucial medical help they require.

To help with the pediatric surgery need in Gaza, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) has created a Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Program in Gaza as well as the Gaza Amputee Project. These initiatives help provide cardiac surgery and treatment for Palestinian children, as well as surgery and prostheses for child amputees. Our humanitarian work has never been more important or time-sensitive due to the recent violence in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
