PCRF Launches Groundbreaking Humanitarian Effort: First-Ever Evacuation of Wounded Palestinian Children from Gaza to South Africa for Life-Saving Care

The Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF) is proud to announce a groundbreaking humanitarian effort in cooperation with our brothers and sisters in South Africa. This groundbreaking initiative not only delivers the essential medical care these children desperately need but also underscores the profound power of solidarity, compassion, and shared humanity in times of crisis.

In a statement, PCRF’s Chairwoman of the Board, Vivian Khalaf, said: “We are profoundly grateful to our friends and supporters in South Africa for their exceptional commitment and support. This initiative represents a significant milestone for PCRF and reaffirms our dedication to ensuring that these children receive the urgent and specialized care they require. This partnership truly exemplifies global solidarity and compassion.”

Tareq Hailat, Head of PCRF’s Treatment Abroad Program, added: “Since January 2024, the PCRF Treatment Abroad team has successfully secured the evacuation of over 120 Palestinian children from Gaza to the US, Middle East, and Europe for treatment. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the South African community for their invaluable support in making this mission possible. We are committed to expanding this crucial effort, as many more children in Gaza remain in urgent need of medical attention.”

Mira (age 9), Lina (age 17), and Sanad (age 1)—each of whom had sustained severe injuries resulting from Israeli bombing attacks on Gaza, with conditions including complex fractures and burns. The three children are being evacuated with eight companions, parents and siblings. The first patient is scheduled to arrive at Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, 30 August, with the other two expected to follow shortly thereafter.

The private hospital in Centurion, Pretoria, together with local communities, will provide comprehensive medical care and psychosocial support for the children and their families throughout their stay, ensuring a supportive environment during their treatment.

The PCRF and our friends in South Africa are committed to ensuring that these children receive the best possible care, and that this partnership serves as a powerful symbol of what can be achieved when we come together in the spirit of Ubuntu—“I am because you are, you are because we are.”

As these young patients prepare to make the journey to South Africa, they carry with them the support of people around the world who believe in their right to a healthier future. We believe this partnership marks a significant shift in global humanitarian efforts and a beautiful reminder that compassion and healing know no borders.
